The newest addition to the abilities pile. Forged a little coal
scraper before work today... The wife loves it. More later...

  1. That's a useful-looking forge you've go there. If you add some firebricks or sheet steel to the sides it helps you to build a deeper fire and so you can better control the atmosphere of the fire so you can avoid the oxidising region. This is useful to avoid burning your work (turning it into a sparkler) and is important if you try fire/forge welding. Depending on several factors (mainly the size of your fuel and how much air you're blasting into the fire), with coal you need about 6 inches of fuel underneath your workpiece and a few inches above also.

An excellent web resource is www.iforgeiron.com -- a website with extensive beginners' lessons, 'blueprints' (presentations on a particular objects, tool or technique), photo and video gallery and a discussion forum with a large number of participants from around the globe. There are at least several centuries of experience represented on IFI, largely with regards to blacksmithing and bladesmithing, but also on a variety of subjects. My 'handle' on the forum is matt87.
